This week's new releases have some interesting choices. Here are my picks for the week:

1. Dune Extended Edition. The extended edition portion of this refers to the infamous Alan Smithee extended TV cut which David Lynch disowned. This is an example of how an extended edition can actually make a film worse. The theatrical release is here as well, and if you are a Frank Herbert or David Lynch fan, this is a great addition to your collection.

2. Tim Burton's Corpse Bride. Tim Burton has done it again with another critically acclaimed stop motion animation picture. Interestingly enough, Tim Burton did not direct The Nightmare Before Christmas. It was directed by Henry Selick. DVDTalk chimes in with their review.

3. Bubble. Need I say more ... Here is IGN's review.

Bubble Reviews

⁃ Bubble opened over the weekend and brought in about $70,000 in theaters.  However, DVD preorders have far exceeded expectations.  MSNBC and Yahoo!Fianance have the details.  By the way, here is a review and Rotten Tomatoes' freshness rating.  More to follow.

Is this the future?

Starting next week, you will for the first time be able to buy a movie at the same time it is playing in the movie theaters.  Steven Soderbergh's Bubble will be opening in theaters this Friday.  On Tuesday, January 31st, you will be able to buy the DVD.  Granted this is a low budget, fringe, independent movie, but, does this signify a frame shift in how movies will be marketed to the public?  I, for one, hope so.  I do infinitely more movie viewing at home than at the theater.

 

A Great Little Tool for the Griffin iTrip

If you use the Griffin iTrip, Griffin has a small application for download that lists the open frequencies for many US broadcast markets.  This allows you to set up a playlist with only the frequencies available in your area or in areas that you plan to travel to.  This saves time both looking for available frequencies and scrolling through that long list of iTrip stations.

 

Also, do not forget to set these iTrip files to be skipped during a music shuffle.  Right click on the file, open "Get info", go to the Options tab, and enable "Skip when shuffling".
